50+ beauty, home & body care plastic-free items for plastic-free July

The month of July might be over, but that doesn’t mean the sentiment of Plastic-Free July (or #PlasticFreeJuly rlly) should end. On the contrary! Reducing plastic waste should be an every day thought and consideration when making purchases. Did you know that since the beginning of plastic production in the 1950’s (yes, plastic is relatively new in the scheme of things) approximately 8.3 billion tons of plastic has been produced (ref)  And of that total, only about 9% has been recycled, 12% has been burned and the remaining 79% ends up in landfills and the environment. (ref) YIKES! You can see why the Plastic-Free July movement was started, right??

Last month I posted several Plastic-Free July posts on Instagram to share products that can replace their counterparts that use plastic, but thought it would be good to recap all the products here on the blog too. Here is everything I shared there with links to purchase and learn more about:

  • Nature’s Trace Shampoo Bar – No plastic and nearly no waste at all! This one smells incredibly delightful, but it was a seasonal scent (there is an Almond Milk scent still available). You just lather in your hands and work through your hair!
  • Plaine Products Shampoo & Conditioner – These products are in fully aluminum bottles that can be sent back to the company to be recycled.
  • Seed Phytonutrients Moisture Leave-In Conditioner – These shower-friendly paper bottles are made of 100% post-consumer recycled paper with a post-consumer recycled plastic liner, resulting in 60% less plastic than a traditional bottle.
  • Urb Apothecary Sculpting Pomade – This sample size is in a metal tin and the full size container is glass with a metal lid. 
  • Fat & The Moon Dry Shampoo – These are packaged in cardboard tubes. There are plastic tops/bottoms, but the plastic is much more minimal than other packaging options.

  • Āether Beauty Co – Very minimal plastic on this eyeshadow single. Their eyeshadow palettes are not only ethically-sustainably formulated, but are also packaged in eco-friendly cardboard packaging that can be recycled.
  • Urb Apothecary Lips Cheeks Botanical Tint – This beautiful lip and cheek tint provides a sheer moisturizing, pure botanical tint. It is fully packaged in a cardboard push-up tube. They are 100% biodegradable!
  • Nudi Goods Plastic Free Raven Mascara – Made with super simple and natural ingredients, this mascara is completely plastic free! This one is packed in cardboard that’s 100% biodegradable, but you can also purchase in a metal tin. They also sell these spoolies to use with it which have a completely wooden handle.
  • Nudi Goods Copper Poppy Shimmer Stick – This highlighter stick is the prettiest shade of copper and is made with super simple and natural ingredients. It’s packed in a cardboard push-up tube that’s 100% biodegradable.
  • Osmia Black Clay Facial Soap – Using bar soap as a face wash is an easy way to go plastic free. This one is packaged in just a recyclable cardboard box.
  • The Seaweed Bath Co. Purifying Detox Facial Bar – Another facial cleansing bar soap option that’s also packaged in just a cardboard box. It’s fully recyclable.
  • Belmondo Skincare After the Rain Toner – This facial toner is packaged in a recyclable glass bottle with a metal lid.
  • Urban Oreganics Makeup Remover – This make up remover is packaged in an eco-friendly glass bottle. This particular bottle does have a plastic cap, but one I’ve received had a metal cap they were testing so could be plastic free very soon!
  • Marleys Monsters Organic Facial Rounds –  Switching to reuse-able cotton products saves the plastic packaging that they typically come in. These work great with the makeup remover!

  • Mama Suds Toilet Bombs – Waterless toilet bowl cleaner tabs packaged in a muslin bag
  • Meliora Laundry Powder – A powdered laundry detergent in a cardboard and metal package.
  • Meliora Stain Stick – A waterless solid stain remover that you just add a bit of water to in order to activate. Packaged in a cardboard box.
  • Eco Nuts Soap Berries – A simple and natural laundry detergent that’s just a nut! Packaged in a cardboard box.
  • Mighty Nest Wool Dryer Balls – These had no packaging and are reusable hundreds of times replacing single use dryer sheets that are often made of plastic.

  • No Tox Life Dish Block – Hardly any packaging on this dish soap alternative.
  • Re Zip Gallon Bag – So useful in replacing single use gallon plastic bags.
  • Stasher Sandwich Bag – These are the best replacement for ziplock bags. They come in a ton of sizes too!
  • Miss Bee Haven Beeswax Wrap – The perfect alternative for plastic wrap. Use on sandwiches, bowls, jars, anything really!
  • Food Huggers – These act as lids for jars and cans or as a wrap on half used fruits and vegetables. I also have the avocado Food Hugger and use it all the time.
  • Lkly Dish Scrubbers – Reusable hundreds of times and no plastic like traditional pot scrubbers.
  • Coconut Scrubber from Ecomended Shop – Another plant based dish scrubber that doesn’t contain a bit of plastic.

  • Metal Drinking Straws – Infinitely re-useable and not an ounce of plastic!
  • Organic Cotton French Net Bag – A cute and eco-friendly way to carry your farmer’s market finds.
  • Swell Water Bottle – Save hundreds and hundreds of single use water bottles by filling up this re-useable one.
  • Copper Water Bottle – Another great plastic bottle saver that is also said to be antibacterial and cleansing to the water it houses.
  • Lotus Trolley Produce Bags – Save the waste from grocery produce bags by bringing these re-usable drawstring bags.
  • Baggu Reuseable Shopping Bags – The cutest BYOB (bring your own bags) shopping bags there are. They fold into these little pockets too to save space.
